Photographing newborn twin girls in Lancaster, PA
This summer I had the opportunity to photograph newborn twin baby girls for the first time in a beautiful historic Victorian home in the countryside of Lancaster County. It was such a treat to meet this family and discover that we have many mutual friends in common.
As a Lancaster newborn lifestyle photographer, I love having the opportunity to visit families’ homes and tell their unique story in photographs. I was in awe of all the details and thought put into the twins’ bright, colorful, whimsical nursery space: Books organized in rainbow order, hand stenciled wallpaper, childhood Raggedy Ann dolls on the bookshelves and a beautiful wooden Victorian style dollhouse. Every room of their home felt like walking into a a carefully curated, thoughtful work of art, and each nook and cranny held so many unique personal touches. Their little girls get to grow up in the most magical place! My only regret is that I didn’t manage to capture one of their many cats in any photos.
When is the best time to take newborn photos?
One question I often get asked is what is the best timeframe to take newborn photos? Some newborn photographers prefer to do newborn sessions in the first 10 days of life when babies are typically sleeping a lot and easy to tuck and swaddle up in a tight little bundle. Because I offer newborn lifestyle photography and use a documentary style story-telling approach, I don’t limit the timeframe quite as much. I usually suggest sometime in the first month or two of life, keeping in mind that the sleepy squishy newborn photos usually happen in the first couple weeks and babies are usually becoming more alert and interactive after they reach the 6 week mark. These twin girls were just over two months old when I took their photos. They arrived 6 weeks early, and as you can see they were still quite tiny at 2 months old.
As a mom of three, I get that babies come on their own schedule and plans change. A photo session might feel overwhelming during early postpartum recovery, and some parents only decide they want professional newborn photography after baby arrives. I’m flexible on timing and love capturing the small details and the connection between parents and their new little one(s).
