Style Guide: What to wear

Coordinate vs. Match: choose a color palette and mix and match patterns with solids instead of having everyone wear matching outfits. For example if someone wears a floral dress, try pulling various colors from the dress for the outfits of other family members. Try to vary the textures (denim, cotton, lace) and choose small, subtle patterns over large ones.

Accessorize: Depending on the setting and your style, it can be fun to add accessories such as hair bows, scarves, hats, belts, suspenders, a blanket etc. to add interest and personality.

What Is Your Home Decor Like? Think about where you want to display the photos in your home and what colors you are naturally drawn to. If your home decor style is light and airy or dark and moody or bright and bold, this may affect your color palette. You are always encouraged to personalize your session with props or clothing that shows what is unique about each individual.

Dress for the Season & Location: For a spring outdoor session where the location typically has a lots of greens and white and light pink flowers it might be a good idea to go with a soft neutral or pastel color palette whereas a fall session might call for more deep bold colors and layers like scarves, sweaters and tights. Similarly for in home newborn sessions I typically recommend a softer, lighter color palette. Of course none of these are hard and fast rules; wear what makes you feel comfortable and what you look good in!

Things to Avoid: large, bold contrasting patterns, clothing with text, graphics or logos, and neon colors because these are all things that tend to distract.
