It's been quite a while since I've shared a personal update and figured I should share a bit about what has been going on with me lately because I've got some BIG NEWS and there are changes in store! Every October we head up to the mountains to my family's cabin for the day. My parents have been working hard the past couple of years to fix up the cabin and make it cozy. It started as a hunting cabin for all the Engle family men many years ago when my dad was just a boy. My dad, grandfather and great grandfather all helped to build it. I decided to document the day in photos and had my husband and sister capture some pictures with me in them as well. Now on to the news! We will be welcoming another little pumpkin into our family in March! We are very excited that Cora will have a baby brother! Anyone have some baby boy clothes they are ready to hand down? So far I am feeling great and it's hard to believe I'm already past the half way point. I'm crossing my fingers that I won't have gestational diabetes like I did with Cora so I've been trying to watch my carb and sugar intake and make an attempt to exercise a couple times a week (though honestly my exercise so far pretty much consists of carting a toddler around on errands and going up and down the stairs in my house).
As we prepare to transition to a family of four, I've been thinking a lot about my photography business and the direction I want to head over the next few years. I am not 100 percent decided yet, but I have mostly decided that I am going to start phasing out of wedding photography and focus more on family, editorial and lifestyle photography. Weddings have never been the primary focus of my business and if you are a photographer in Lancaster you probably have come to realize that every other person in this town is a wedding photographer. No joke, I probably learn of a new wedding photographer in the area every week or two! So other than the saturated market, the main reason I want to refocus my business is so that I can spend more time raising my young ones. Also I must say that becoming a mother has definitely brought out the desire to document the beauty and chaos of parenthood and of course all the adorable babies and kiddos. (See photo below of my sister and her adorable family).
So what are my next steps? My first goal before baby number two arrives is to do a little business makeover to really hone in on communicating the type of experience I want my clients to have and my approach to photography. I am a natural light photographer who desires to capture life moments. This documentary approach is commonly referred to as lifestyle photography. I do not have a studio and my focus is not on posed pictures of everyone looking at the camera (though I will gladly take those photos too!). I need to "rebrand myself" as they say. This means a new website needs to happen. I want people to see my work and be drawn to the colors, the emotion and the joy. I also need to restructure my pricing and create some new package options. So, all that said, you can expect to see an updated face to Melissa Engle Photography in the new year!
